Glen Lane Mills
November 10, 1957 - August 28, 2021
Glen Lane Mills, 63, of Prosperity, SC (or “God’s Country” as he liked to call it) passed peacefully from this world on Saturday, August 28, 2021 after a courageous battle with Covid. Glen was born at Mills Clinic in Prosperity on November 10, 1957 to Sue Riley Mills and George Lake Mills. The Saluda County 4-H Club was a huge part of his youth. He won many statewide awards for showing Holstein cows in 4-H. He also won the 4-H statewide dune buggy building championship. That same beloved dune buggy was sold to pay the hospital bills to bring home his first little bundle of joy- 9 months and 6 weeks after he married Christy. Glen graduated from Mid-Carolina High School and later, at the top of his class from Nashville Auto Diesel College. While attending college, he worked at Mid-Tennessee Ford, which led to his lifelong love of Ford vehicles and mechanic work. He was the owner of Clear Lake Enterprises Trucking, and was formerly a member of the Southeastern Stompers Clogging Teams. For the last decade of his life, he was, at first, a less-than-enthusiastic patron of Town Theatre, due to his wife’s extensive involvement. That later turned into becoming a corporate donor, much to the surprise of Christy. Quietly surprising loved ones with cars, homes, trips and so forth made him genuinely happy. His other involvement with the arts came through his involvement with his wife’s dance studio (Christy’s School of Dance, Christy Mills Dance Arts and now, SC Music and Dance Academy.) He never missed a single recital for the whole 44 years it has existed, even if it meant getting there just in time for the finale. He obliged his beloved by dancing not only as a clogger, but also as a hula girl, a trashy woman and a Tootsie Roll among many more wacky routines. Audiences always roared with appreciation when he set foot onstage, admiring his easygoing bravery more than his fancy footwork. (Although he did a mean one-of-a-kind butterfly). Glen loved driving his 18-wheeler, motorcycles (especially with Wyman), the lake, hunting and fishing, estate sales, grilling for his family and friends (particularly Caughman’s onion sausage), traveling to Nascar races with Larry or Christy, family cruises, old vehicles, road trips around America, the Hollywood community and everyone in it, his Corinth Lutheran Church Family, Clemson and just sitting on the couch with his honey watching TV, particularly old Western cowboy movies. His children and wife often silently snickered with each other at the sight of this massive man reduced to tears over the Hallmark movies, Budweiser Clydesdale commercials and even the Hannah Montana movie. He was a gentle giant with an extremely tender heart. He was so very giving, both of his time, money and talents. At the age of 21, he bought his younger sister, Susan a Mercury Cougar, with his own hard-earned money. He loved his dogs: Blackie, Zoey, Roscoe, Buster and Stitch, and Kitty, the office cat, and many more already passed from this earth. He was a lifelong member of Corinth Lutheran Church, where he was the current President of the Joint Council of Corinth- St. Mark’s Parish; current president of the Lutheran Men in Mission of the parish; current chairman of the property committee, and he headed up the soon-to-be completed project for the outdoor lighting of the church yard. Of his own free will, he was the Sunday School snack man. Glen is survived by his parents, his wife, Christy Shealy Mills; his children: Laney Mills ( Dwayne Durbin) of Lexington, SC; Matthew Mills, of Bethesda, MD; Andrew Mills (Celeste) of Prosperity; and Zanna Mills (David Latorre) of Kissimmee, Fla; grandsons, Ethan and Luke Shealy, and soon-to-be step grandchildren, Jaden and Annabelle Durbin; his sister, Susan Helen Mills; sisters-in-law Sherry Shealy Martschink (Karl Duppstadt); Lorri Shealy Unumb (Dan); brother-in-law, S. Shawn Shealy, Sr.; and a host of nieces and nephews and much-loved former in-laws. He also leaves behind his right hand and lifelong friend, Wanda Matthews Taylor, his kinda-like sisters-in-law, Anne Marie Green and Caryn Crabb and his constant companion and best buddy, Blackie. He was pre-deceased by his brother-in-law, Rod Shealy; mother-in-law, Elsie P. Shealy; father-in-law, Ryan C. Shealy; grandparents, Helen Lake Mills, Thomas Pinkney (T.P.) Mills, Jesse Stevenson Riley, and Ola Mae Force Riley. Funeral services will be held at Corinth Lutheran Church, (638 Corinth Road, Saluda, SC 29138) at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 1, 2021. Pallbearers are : Ethan Shealy, Shawn Shealy, James Walkup, Fred Gallman, Christopher Unumb and Ronnie Ruff. Due to Covid, MASKS WILL BE REQUIRED INSIDE BUILDINGS. The service will also be broadcast on 89.9 FM for those wishing to remain in their cars for a drive-up service. Also, due to Covid, there will be no visitation and, following the service, a private burial for the immediate families of Glen and Christy. Memorials may be made to The Unumb Center for Neurological Development (formerly The Autism Academy of South Carolina) 1505 Blanding Street, Columbia, SC 29201, which was founded by his adored sister-in-law, Lorri.
