Melvin Wilmot Cameron

May 23, 1926 - September 3, 2017

Saluda, SC Wilmot Cameron Mr. Melvin Wilmot Cameron (91) of Saluda passed away Sunday morning, September 3, 2017, after a sudden illness. He was surrounded by loved ones at the Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Born May 23 1926, Mr. Cameron was born the fourth son of Elmer Luther and Eunice Merchant Cameron of Saluda. He was born and raised in the Hollywood community, graduating from Hollywood High School. Mr. Cameron moved to the town of Saluda with his bride, Sarah Patricia Martin Cameron of Silverstreet. Mr. Cameron had many roles throughout his 91 years. He began by serving in World War II in the United States Navy. Later, he went to tech school in Louisville, Kentucky. He returned to South Carolina to work at the Savannah River Plant, eventually opening his own small business on Main Street in Saluda. Mr. Cameron enjoyed 57 years with his wife Patricia in their home. While they both loved and supported each other throughout the years, Mr. Cameron ultimately became her primary caregiver during her long battle with dementia. Mr. Cameron was an avid sports fan, a faithful member of Saluda Baptist Church, and a devoted and loving husband, brother, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by a son, Dennis Melvin Cameron (Evelyn) of Clover, a daughter, Patricia Lynn Cameron of Mt. Pleasant, and a daughter-in-law Susan Ladell Schumpert Cameron of Saluda. He is also survived by two brothers William “Billy” E. Cameron (Betty) of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Ethan Laverne Cameron (Margie) of Greenwood, a grandson, Thomas Melvin Cameron (Aimee) of Monroe, Georgia, two granddaughters, Elizabeth Cameron Hassen (David) of Spartanburg and Allie Cameron Moore (Adam) of Raleigh, North Carolina, six great-grandchildren Rylan, Brett, Carson, and Tatum Cameron and Cameron and Brandon Hassen. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Sarah Patricia Martin Cameron, a son Alan Martin Cameron of Saluda, and four brothers, Vernon Cordelle Cameron, James Meredith Cameron, Thomas Lewis Cameron, and Milburn Eugene Cameron. Services will be held Wednesday, September 6, 2017, at 3:00 p.m. at Saluda Baptist Church, in Saluda, South Carolina, with burial service immediately following at Travis Park, Saluda, South Carolina. The family will receive friends immediately following the services at Ramey Funeral Home until 6:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Saluda Baptist Church, 112 West Wheeler Circle, Saluda, SC 29138.
