Benjamin Merchant, Jr.

Benjamin Smith Merchant, Jr., 73, died August 12, 2023, at his home.

Born in Richland County and a son of the late Benjamin Smith Merchant, Sr., and Marie Mitchell Merchant, he was the husband of Carolyn Langford Merchant. Mr. Merchant served in the SC National Guard 122 ENG Company in Saluda. He was owner and operator of Merchant Farms and was former Chief and founding member, having served 24 years with Midlands Fire Department. Mr. Merchant was a member of Sardis Baptist Church and the Young Farmers Association.

Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Langford Merchant of Saluda, a son, Benjamin Merchant, III (Melanie Fogle) of Saluda, a daughter, Pamela "Freddie" New (Gary) of Enoree, a sister, Virginia Merchant of Moore, SC, three grandchildren, Austin Merchant, Lee New, Sophia New, and great-granddaughter, Annsleigh Merchant.

Mr. Merchant was proceeded in death by a daughter, Marie M. Bryan.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am, Saturday August 19, 2023, at Sardis Baptist Church with Rev. Michael Bell and Rev. Burton Campbell officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church social hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
