Bettis Grigsby "Grig" Herlong, III

Bettis Grigsby "Grig" Herlong, III, 77, passed away Sunday, September 7, 2025 at his home.

Born in Durham, NC and a son of the late Bettis Grigsby Herlong, Jr. and Ruby Corley Herlong, he was the husband of Alice Dawn Perry Herlong. Mr. Herlong was a graduate of Strom Thurmond High School and went on to play football at the University of Georgia, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Education. He later retired from Lexington County School District One in Pelion. Mr. Herlong was a devoted member of Shiloh Methodist Church and a former member of the Saluda Young Farmers Association. He deeply loved his family and cherished the time he spent with them.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 55 years is a son, Bettis J. Herlong, Sr. (Anna) of Ridge Spring, two daughters, Jennifer H. Wertz (Lee) and Alicea H. Warren (Brandon) both of Saluda, two brothers, Rodney C. Herlong, Sr. (Charlene) of Saluda and Rev. Benjamin W. Herlong, Sr. (Barbara) of W. Columbia, a sister, Lora H. Atwood (Cal) of W. Columbia, twelve grandchildren, Miranda Wertz, Michelle Vereen, Mandy Drafts (Austin), Meredith Wertz, McKenzie Wertz, Haleigh Herlong, B.J. Herlong (Chelsea), Hunter Herlong (Stephanie), Kaylyn Herlong, Bethany Herlong, David Warren and Caroline Warren, ten great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Herlong was preceded in death by a son, David Perry Herlong.

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, September 11, 2025, at Travis Park Cemetery with Rev. Joe N. Long and Rev. Bob Huggins officiating. The family will receive friends following the graveside service.
