Bula Matthews
Bula Mae Lowman Matthews, 82, passed away Friday, October 2, 2026, at Lexington Medical Center surrounded by her family.
Born in Lexington, and a daughter of the late Elzie Vernon Lowman and Laurel Pearl Keisler Lowman, she was the wife of William Lloyd (Junior) Matthews, Jr. Mrs. Bula was a devoted Christian, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a cherished member of her community. She retired from the Saluda County Courthouse, where she served as a bailiff. Throughout her working years, she also worked at Saluda Shirt Plant, Milliken, Monroe Company, and was a bus driver.
Her faith was an important part of her life. She was a faithful member of Nazareth Methodist Church, where she joyfully sang in the church choir and was a member of the Women of Faith. Her church family was very special to her, and she found great joy in worship, fellowship, and serving alongside others.
One of the greatest joys of Mrs. Bula’s life was her grandchildren. She shared a special and treasured bond with each of them. They were not simply her grandchildren; they were a source of happiness, pride, laughter, and love. She cherished every moment spent with them, whether through simple conversations, family gatherings, or the countless little moments that became treasured memories. She never missed an opportunity to watch them compete in sports, cheer them on from the sidelines, or attend their awards ceremonies and celebrate their accomplishments. She was always one of their biggest supporters and proudest cheerleaders, and the memories they created together will forever remain a cherished part of their lives.
Mrs. Bula will be remembered for her strong faith, loving heart, dedication to her family and community, and the unconditional love she gave to those around her. Her presence brought warmth and joy to the lives of many, but especially to her grandchildren, who held a very special place in her heart.
Surviving alongside her husband of 56 years are two sons, Dexter Matthews (Shanna) and Neil Matthews (Brooke), five grandchildren, Samantha Hartley (Trey), Jeremy Matthews, Kate Matthews, Libby Matthews, and Audrey Matthews, a great-granddaughter, Adalynn Hartley, a soon to be great-grandson, Wylie Hartley, a twin sister, Eula Price, and a brother, Harold Lowman (Lindell).
Mrs. Bula was preceded in death by a sister, Myrtie Lowman Heywood and four brothers, Jessie Vernon Lowman, Daniel Lowman, Roy Lowman, and Cecil Lowman.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at Nazareth Methodist Church with Rev. Kenneth Freeman officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church social hall.
Pallbearers will be Jeremy Matthews, Trey Hartley, Ernie Bledsoe, Eric Price, Jody Matthews, and Andrew Bowdler.
Memorials may be made to Women of Faith, Nazareth Methodist Church, 130 Nazareth Church Road, Leesville, SC 29070.
