Caroline Herlong
Caroline Keith Herlong, 95, of Saluda, SC, passed away peacefully in her home on Wednesday, October 19, 2022.
Born October 16, 1927 in Chappells, SC, she was the daughter of the late James M. and Irene Webb Keith. In 1944, she graduated from Saluda High School and then from Furman University in 1948, going on to teach home economics, third grade and kindergarten. She retired in 1988 from Saluda Elementary School after a 30-year teaching career. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church where she was an active member of the J. N. Deloache Sunday School Class.
Caroline was an avid reader and accomplished seamstress. She loved to entertain and was known for her cooking. She and Ben enjoyed their dance and bridge clubs. She also loved to travel with her family and friends. Every summer, she treated her family to a beach vacation.
Mrs. Herlong is preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Benjamin H. Herlong, and siblings Elizabeth F. Keith, Irene K. Sharpe and James M. Keith, Jr.
Surviving are four daughters, Elizabeth Ann (John) Melton of Saluda, Rosemary Herlong (Michael) of Waynesville, NC, Caroline Keith Herlong of Lexington and Rene (David) Miller of Saluda; eight grandchildren, Ben (Karissa) Burton of Coral Springs, FL, Mary Elise (Heath) Smathers of Sylva, NC, D.J. (Brittni) Miller of Saluda, Katie (Griff) Dorn of Saluda, Rebekah Miller of Batesburg, Jeffrey (Samantha) Miller of Kingsport, TN, Carrie Myers of Lexington and McKenzie (Darren) Sigmon of West Columbia; ten great-grandchildren with two more on the way; two sisters-in-law, Dora Keith of Chappells and Ann Herlong-Bodman of Mt. Pleasant.
A funeral service will be held at 2 PM, Sunday, October 23, 2022 at St. Paul United Methodist Church with Rev. Cameron Levi officiating. Interment will follow at Travis Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of Mrs. Caroline Herlong.
