Dora Hare
Dora DeLoache Hare, widow of Sidney B. Hare, died March 16, 2024. Dora was born in Saluda County, South Carolina, in 1927, a daughter of James Nathaniel and Mary Lester DeLoache. Saluda County remained her home for seventy-seven years. After Sidney's death she moved to Woodside Hills in Asheville, North Carolina, to share a home with their oldest son, Jimmy (and Robin) and their two daughters, Molly and Meghan. She moved to Trinity View Retirement in Arden in 2013 and was living at The Greens in Weaverville at the time of her death.
She was a graduate of Saluda High School, attended Erskine College in Due West, South Carolina; she and Sidney were married May 31, 1947. They built a home on the Ridge Spring Highway in Saluda County, where they lived until his death in 2002.
Dora worked part time as legal secretary for the Butler and James Hare Law Firm and as secretary at the elementary school in Saluda while their three children were growing up. Later she worked as personnel secretary for Milliken Textiles and as court reporter for the South Carolina Judicial Department. After her retirement in 1992, she and Sidney had ten very good years together on their small Christmas tree and cattle farm. During those years she volunteered with the elementary school and was on the Board of the Council Aging in Saluda.
An active member of Mt. Pleasant Lutheran Church in Saluda for fifty-five years, she was later a member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit in Mars Hill, N.C.
In the Asheville area she volunteered with the Asheville Buncombe Council of Christian Ministries(ABCCM) and with the North Carolina Arboretum.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Beth of Baltimore, Maryland; sons, James Sidney (Robin) of Weaverville, N.C. and John Herman of Columbia, S. C; grandchildren Maitreya, Molly (Daniel), Meghan, and Kaden; a great-granddaughter Emelyn, and a sister, Sara DeLoache Gibson of Sumter, South Carolina.
She was predeceased by her husband, Sidney Hare; daughters-in-law, Patricia Lee Fraysse Hare and Levanah Ruthschild, sisters, Mary Susan DeLoache and Ruth DeLoache Thompson, and brothers, James Lester DeLoache, Michael Kempson DeLoache and Paul Matheny DeLoache.
A graveside memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, April 6, 2024, at Travis Park Cemetery, Saluda, South Carolina.
