Dorothy Mills Coleman

Dorothy Elinor Mills Coleman, 90, passed away Monday, November 15, 2021 at Self Regional Healthcare.

Born in the Hollywood Community of Saluda County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Pinckney and Helen Lucile Lake Mills, and widow of George Mellwood Coleman. She was a homemaker, having received her B.S. in Home Economics from Winthrop in 1953. She was also a member of Pine Pleasant Baptist Church.

Surviving are three daughters, Angelyn Dorn (Jim) of Edgefield, Helene Neeley (Bob) of Lexington, NC and Melanie Schumpert (Jacob) of Saluda, adopted son, Jackie Swindler (Sherry) of Newberry; a daughter- in-law, Kathy Coleman of Saluda, a brother, George Mills of Prosperity, eight grandchildren, Lewis Patrick Coleman, James Mills Dorn, Heather Marie Neeley, Christopher Jordan Neeley, Caitlin Neeley White (Chase), Emily Selene Neeley, Jackson Swindler. and Joshua Swindler, and four great-grandchildren, Weyman Anthony Coleman, Carter Anthony White, McKenna Marie Atkerson and Althea Lee Neeley.

Mrs. Coleman is preceded in death by two sons, David Patrick Coleman and Greg Mellwood Coleman, a grandson, Thomas Young Coleman, a brother, Fred T. Mills, and infant sister, Sandra Lee Mills.

Mrs. Coleman grew up with a love for the Golden Guernsey Cow from childhood which led to the creation of Melldoro Farm with her husband in 1953. She was the recipient of the SC Guernsey Cattle Club Honoree of the Year in 1997, Saluda County Farm City Citizen of the Year Award in 2002, and the SC Farm Bureau Distinguished Service Award in 2012.

She was always a strong advocate for Farmers and agriculture, and was recognized for her dedication of service & leadership to the South Carolina Farm Bureau Women's Committee from 1980-2003. She also held various positions on committees such as being a Charter Member of the Saluda County Pull-It Festival, SC Master Farm Homemakers Guild, and Co-chair of the Farm City Banquet.

She was always proud to have been a member of the Hollywood High School Basketball State Championship Team. She loved her Clemson Tigers. She & her husband were IPTAY members for over 70 years.

A graveside service will be held at 3 PM, Wednesday, November 17, 2021 at Pine Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery with Dr. Donald McCall "Mac" Brunson officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. The family requests that all who attend to follow COVID protocols.

The family wishes to thank all the special care given by Dr. Ralph Riley, the staff at Saluda Nursing Center, and Self Regional Healthcare of Greenwood.
