Obituary

Wilbur Dwight Scurry, 78, died Sunday, June 15, 2014 at North Greenville Hospital.

Born in Saluda County and a son of the late Everett and Myrtis Crouch Scurry, he was the husband of Callie Rae Edwards Scurry. Mr. Scurry was an Eagle Scout, a US Air Force veteran and a graduate of Newberry College. He was a retired teacher and retired bus supervisor for Saluda School District 1, was an independent Insurance Agent with Scurry Agency for 31 years. He was a mason and member of Travis Lodge #241 and a member of the Gold Wing Motorcycle Club. Mr. Scurry was founder and Past President of Palmetto Cove Trailer and RV Park. He was instrumental in establishing county-wide fire service for Saluda County and instrumental in establishing the Saluda County Airport Commission and also the re-opening of the airport and he retired as Saluda County Emergency Preparedness Director in 1998. Mr. Scurry was a member of Red Bank Baptist Church where he served as Sunday School teacher, choir member and deacon.

Surviving are his wife, Callie Rae Edwards Scurry, three daughters, Arlene Scurry Puryear (Bobby) of Leesville, Melvia Scurry Kerby (Tim) of Saluda and Shera Scurry Temples (Rickey) of Saluda, five grandchildren, Ashleigh Puryear Griffith (Dane), Kaitlyn Puryear Corley (Chan), Caleb Forrest Kerby, English Malie Kerby and HannaGrace Temples.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 pm, Tuesday evening at Ramey Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held 4 pm, Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at Red Bank Baptist Church with Rev. Gary Romines officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
