With full hearts and deep gratitude for a life well lived, the family of Emma Susie Rodgers Black, 90, announces her peaceful passing on Monday, December 1, 2025, surrounded by family at Saluda Nursing Center.
Born in Saluda, and a daughter of the late Homer Lewis Rodgers and Susie Norris Rodgers, she was the wife of the late Grady William "Jack" Black. Mrs. Black dedicated her life to the works she valued most, caring for her family, nurturing a home filled with warmth, and supporting everyone fortunate enough to step through her door. When she married a young farmer, the late "Jack", she stepped into a life rooted in the rhythms of the land. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and the gentle core of the family farm, her presence was a blessing to all who knew her. Emma Susie lived her life guided by her deep Catholic faith, which shaped the way she cared for others. She was a member of St. Williams Catholic Church since birth, actively continuing Mass until her age limited her ability. Ultimately, her family and faith were twin pillars of her life and legacy.
Surviving are two sons, Ronnie Keith Black of Saluda, and Darryl Glenn Black (Tiffany) of St. John, IN, three grandchildren, Jan Barr (Derek), Crystal Black, and Ellen Black, five great-grandchildren, Emma Black (Dylan), Alex Cochran, Adalyn Cochran, Ellison Barr, and George Barr, and a great-great-granddaughter, Emory.
Mrs. Black was preceded in death by her husband, Grady William "Jack" Black, two sons, Robert Leon Black, Homer William Black, a daughter in law, Robin Black, a brother, Leroy Rodgers, and a sister, Dorothy Jolly.
Her family extends heartfelt thanks to those who supported her in later years, especially her former daughter in law, Debbie Black, mother of Jan Barr and Crystal Black, and niece, Joanne Vaughn.
A funeral Mass will be held 3 p.m. on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at St. Williams Catholic Church with Father Finnerty officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Memorials may be made to St. Williams Catholic Church, 116 St. Williams Church Road, Ward, SC 29166.
