Obituary

Harold Etheredge McCarty, 93, died Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at Hospice Care of the Piedmont in Greenwood.

Born in Saluda County and a son of the late John Samson Bell and Eunabelle Wheeler McCarty, he was the husband of Zell Rankin McCarty. He was first married to the late Theresa Vance McCarty. Mr. McCarty was a US Army veteran during World War II in the 86th Chemical Mortar Battalion. He served 20 years as Sherriff of Saluda County and was president of the Sherriff's Association in 1977. He was a member of Sardis Baptist Church where he served in many capacities.

Surviving are a son, Tim McCarty of Seattle, WA, a daughter, Marsha Cisa of Mt. Pleasant, two stepsons, John Robert Crawford of Johnston and Von Crawford of Saluda, five grandchildren, Brandon Crawford, Robbie Crawford, Sheila Paleruan, Lee McCarty and Bailey Harrison, two step grandchildren, Nick Crawford and Jesse Crawford and a great-grandson, Tucker Crawford.

Mr. McCarty was preceded in death by his first wife, Theresa Vance McCarty and a son, John Harold McCarty.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Friday, June 20, 2014 at Sardis Baptist Church with Rev. Dennis Campbell and Rev. Billy Daniel officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends after the service. The body is at the home and placed in the church at 1:00 PM.

The family would like to thank the staff of HospiceCare of the Piedmont Hospice House for their compassionate care during Mr. Harold's illness.
