James Wayne "Big Orange" Long
James Wayne "Big Orange" Long, Sr. 82, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, October 15, 2022.
Born in Saluda County and a son of the late James and Ora Mae Rogers Long, he was the husband of Dorothy Faye Forrest Long. Mr. Long was a member of Pine Pleasant Baptist Church and served in the South Carolina National Guard, 122nd Engineer Company in Saluda. He worked hard as a farmer, construction worker, truck driver. He became known as Big Orange while trucking across country with oranges. He ended his career as an entrepreneur in pipeline construction working with Country Way Contracting. He enjoyed traveling, camping, and telling stories of his adventures across America. He started dirt track racing at a young age and passed on his love for racing through each of his children.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 63 years, Dorothy Faye, three children, Russell (Lori) of Saluda, Elizabeth Ann Goldman "Lesa"(Eddie) of Saluda, Rohn Dean "Deano" (Andrea) of Saluda, Four grandchildren Kristi Robertson (Lucas), Ashlee Bledsoe (Megan), Laken Burgeson, and Coleton Long (Alyssa), Seven great grandchildren Payton Bowling, Brooklyn Burgeson, Emme Robertson, Jace Burgeson, Gage Robertson, Ella Burgeson, Wyatt Bledsoe and a brother Mike Long (Allison) of Saluda. Predeceased are a son, James Wayne Long, Jr. "Jim" and brothers Theron Long, Oscar Gene Long, Donald Augustus Long and Kenneth Long.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Tuesday, October 18, 2022 at Pine Pleasant Baptist Church with Rev. Jonathan Deal officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the social hall.
Pallbearers are Ashlee Bledsoe, Lucas Robertson, Coleton Long, Justin Shealy, Kent Long, Jason Long and Sean Maloney. Honorary Pallbearers are Payton Bowling, Jace Burgeson, Gage Robertson, and Wyatt Bledsoe.
