Mary Matthews

Mary Frances Lydie Matthews, 81, passed away Wednesday, December 25, 2024, at Lexington Medical Center surrounded by her family. Born in Clinton, SC, and a daughter of the late John D. Lydie and Charles Margie Fowler Lydie. Mrs. Matthews was retired from Saluda County School District One and a member of Sardis Baptist Church. She was a good friend to all who knew her, helping any way she could.

Her children and grandchildren affectionately referred to her as Puddin' or Granny. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, often taking them on "treasure hunts" when they were little, that consisted of walking the parking lots of the schools, after hours, looking for loose change. She would spend many hours on the weekends with her grands and greatgrands as they began to be born into the family. She never liked to allow her family to leave empty handed, and often had a little snack sack for them to take on their travels. She enjoyed being around people, often spending time with two great friends of hers, Margaret Berry or Judy Bedenbaugh.

Surviving are a son, Michael Matthews (Sherrie) of Saluda, and two daughters, Tonya Frye (Eddie) of Lexington and Janice Marshall of Leesville, as well as five grandchildren as follows, Allen Matthews, Kayla Matthews, Jonathan Frye, Brittney Brewer, and Crystal Shealy, and six great grandchildren with a new one on the way.

Mrs. Matthews was preceded in death by a brother, James Lydia, two sisters, Edna Earle Trent and Barbara Black, and a son-in-law, Lewis Marshall, Sr.
