Michael Padgett, Jr.

Michael Herlong Padgett, Jr., 83, passed away Thursday, October 10, 2024, at Lexington Medical Center.

Born in Sumter, SC and the son of the late Michael Herlong Padgett, Sr. and Janie Kathryn Welch Padgett, he was the husband of the late Jackie Lynn Bivens Padgett, the love of his life. Mr. Padgett was a graduate of Saluda High School where he played football under Coach Mooney Player. He was voted Most Valuable Player for the Saluda Tigers in 1958. He attended Newberry College for some time and then went on to serve in the United States Navy.

Mr. Padgett was the owner of Gladiator Cleaning Services for 40 years. During his lifetime, he discovered his passion for gardening and became a master gardener. He found so much joy in cultivating plants and sharing his knowledge with others, as well as providing lots of fresh fruits and vegetables to his family and friends. Another passion that he shared with his family was playing the ukulele and singing. Later in his life, he carved many ukuleles and gave them to family and friends.

In addition to his business, hobbies, and gardening pursuits, Mr. Padgett was a professional boxer, showcasing his determination and skill in the ring. He also devoted time to volunteering with the local humane society, advocating for animal welfare and creating a welcoming environment for pets and their potential adopters.

One of the highlights of Mr. Padgett's life was a transformative trip to the Holy Land, which deepened his faith and left a lasting impact on his outlook on life.

Surviving are a brother Henry Van Padgett, Sr. (Ann) of Columbia, sisters-in-law Linda (David, Sr) and Sarah (Frederick) and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Padgett was preceded in death by two brothers, David L. Padgett, Sr. and Frederick Welch Padgett and two sisters, Motlena Smith and Marilyn Powell.

The family would like to give special thanks to the caregivers of Community Essential Care for their caring services in his home, staff of the Saluda Nursing Center, as well as Self Regional Medical Center and Lexington Medical Center. They would also like to thank other special individuals who contributed to his personal care and the care of his special pets.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
