Michael "Stumpy" Wertz
Michael Thomas "Stumpy" Wertz, 80, passed away Saturday, August 2, 2025, at the Hospice House of Hospice and Palliative Care of the Piedmont.
Born in Greenwood, and a son of the late Advill Dupre Wertz Sr., and Katie Harrison Wertz, he was the husband of Joanna Tolbert Wertz. Mr. Wertz served his country early in life by joining the National Guard. Following the service, he built a steady and respected career in the telephone industry, where he spent decades installing and repairing lines. He attended Shiloh Methodist Church.
Outside of work and church, Mr. Wertz was most at home in the outdoors. He had a deep love for the mountains and spent countless hours hunting, fishing, and soaking in the peace that only nature can offer. He was a founding member of Big Red Hunting Club, a group that brought together fellow sportsmen and friends to share in the joys of the hunt. He also served his local community as a former member of the Mason Fire Department
Surviving alongside his wife are two sons, Lee Wertz (Jennifer) and BJ Wertz both of Saluda, seven grandchildren, Miranda, Michelle, Mandy, Meredith, McKenzie, Courtney, and Austin, seven great-grandchildren, a sister, Laura Storey (Ted), and a brother, A.D. Wertz all of Saluda.
Mr. Wertz is preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Hammond and a brother, Ernie Wertz.
A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 9, 2025 at Shiloh Methodist Church. The family is requesting casual attire.
