Ruby Corley Herlong, widow of Bettis G. Herlong, Jr., quietly passed from this life to her heavenly reward on Friday night, August 10, 2018. Born in Saluda County, South Carolina, she was the youngest daughter of Luther P. and Ona Long Corley. She was one of 6 children having four brothers and one sister. She grew up in Ward and Saluda, S.C., and graduated from Saluda High School where she was a cheerleader and played guard on the girls basketball team. In 1946, Ruby married the love of her life, Bettis Herlong, Jr.. After their 4 children were all in school, Ruby started working outside the home. She quickly found that she had a knack for numbers and she became a valued bookkeeper and cashier. When her husband was elected Executive Secretary of the S.C. High School Coaches Association, Ruby became his able assistant. They worked side-by-side for SCACA for 23 years until their retirement in 1990.
Ruby was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Saluda.
Ruby lost her beloved Bettis in 2003. She was also preceded in death by a grandson, David Perry Herlong; brothers, L.M., Paul W., and Benjamin Corley; and her sister, Leona C. Brown.
Ruby is survived by; her children, sons and daughters-in-law, Bettis Grigsby (Grig) , III and Alice Dawn Perry Herlong of Saluda; Rodney Corley and Charlene Crouch Herlong of Saluda; Rev. Benjamin Wade and Barbara Hanna Herlong of Cayce, and daughter and son-in-law, Lora H. and Cal H. Atwood of West Columbia; her brother and sister-in-law, Joe E. and Ora C. Corley of Saluda; 8 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends and neighbors. She dearly loved them, each and everyone.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m., Sunday evening at Ramey Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held 4 p.m., Monday, August 13, 2018 at St. Paul United Methodist Church with Rev. Susan Maddox officiating. Interment will follow in Travis Park Cemetery.
