Sammie Eugene "Gene" Werts, 71 died Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at Generations of Batesburg.

Born in Saluda County and a son of the late Vernon Owen and Eunice Nicholson Werts, Mr. Werts was a self-employed painter and was a member of Salem Baptist Church.

Surviving are two nephews, Eddie Werts and Chris Werts both of Saluda and four nieces, Sandra W. Price, Susan W. Frye, Cheryl W. Coleman and Maria W. Stevens all of Saluda.

Mr. Werts was preceded in death by a brother, Vernon Edwin Werts.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Friday, January 13, 2017 at Salem Baptist Church with Rev. Jerrod Marshall and Rev. Suzanne Ringer officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
