Senator Frederick Grant "F.G." Scurry, Jr., 90, died Friday, May 23, 2014 at Saluda Nursing Center.

Born in Saluda County and a son of the late Frederick Grant Scurry, Sr. and Hallie Sineath Scurry, he was the husband of Margaret Jane Collins Scurry. He was a graduate of Saluda High School, Spartanburg Methodist College and Newberry College, Class of 1949. He was a US Army veteran of World War II and was wounded in combat in Bitterfeld, Germany on April 21, 1945. He was a former Commander of Saluda American Legion, Post 65, former Commander of Saluda Disabled American Veterans, Post 37, former Chairman of the Saluda County Airport Commission, former President of Saluda County Chamber of Commerce and former President of Southern Advent Christian Association of Churches.

F.G. is a former Senator of Saluda County serving from 1956 - 1966.Senator Scurry served longer than any other Senator in the history of Saluda County, when each county had one Senator in the General Assembly. Senator Scurry was one of the Founders of the Saluda County Nursing Center and was a member of the Board of Directors for 21 years serving as Chairman of the Board on two separate occasions.

F.G. was a member of Hickory Grove Advent Christian Church where he was pianist for 25 years, Elder for 20 years, taught Sunday School and was a Lay speaker.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret Jane Collins Scurry, a daughter, Janice S. Preston (Tony) of Fairfield, Va. , a son, Grant Scurry (Nancy) of Rock Hill, a daughter in-law, Debbie Scurry of Saluda and grandchildren, Sam Scurry and Caitlin Scurry.

Senator Scurry was preceded in death by a son, Ralph Scurry and a granddaughter, Jennifer Scurry.

Funeral services will be held 4PM, Sunday, May 25, 2014 at Hickory Grove Advent Christian Church with Rev. Tommy Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service in the church sanctuary.
