William Hightower

William Avery Hightower, 91, passed away Sunday, May 15, 2022 at Hospice House of Hospice and Palliative Care of the Piedmont.

Born in Saluda County and the son of the late William Norwood Hightower and Karen Riley Hightower Tennant, he was the husband of Frances Livingston Hightower. A lifelong member of Bethany United Methodist Church, he served as a trustee, MYF Councilor and was part of the Adult Sunday School Class. Mr. Hightower severed in the South Carolina National Guard, 122nd Engineer Company in Saluda. He worked for Newberry Mills until they closed, then retired from Greenwood Mills, working as a textile technician and part time Electrician. He was also employed at Riley's and Sons.

In addition to loving his family and his church, Mr. Hightower enjoyed fishing, gardening, yardwork and farming. When his sons were in Scouts, he also enjoyed going camping and hiking. He was especially fond of Maggie Valley and the mountains.

Surviving are his wife, Frances Livingston Hightower of Saluda, three sons, Rev. William Hightower (Karen), Danny Hightower and Tim Hightower (Tina), all of Saluda, two brothers, Roscoe Hightower (Myra) of Aiken and Robert Hightower of Saluda, two sisters, Edna Faye Witt (Grover) of Saluda and Sylvia Morales of Aiken, a sister-in-law, Mary Hightower of Lexington, one step-brother, Gaston Tennant (Bess) of Lynchburg, VA, one step-sister, Betty Edwards (Homer) of Lexington, three grandchildren, Lisa Hightower (Chris Stewart), Amber Kneece (Jason) and Brittany Hightower, and three great-grandchildren, Heather Hightower, Coby Kneece and Sadie Kneece.

Mr. Hightower is preceded in death by a brother, Lynwood Hightower, a brother-in-law, Ramon Morales and step-father, E.G. Tennant.

A funeral service will be held at 2 PM, Wednesday, May 18, 2022 at Bethany United Methodist Church with Reverends Tim Jones and William Hightower officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service.
